Graduate assistant PhD position in Political ecology / Critical physical geography

I am recruiting a doctoral student to work with me as a graduate assistant at the Institut de géographie et durabilité (IGD) at the Université de Lausanne.

This is a paid position of up to five year duration, with at least half the time dedicated to your independent PhD project and up to half as my teaching/research assistant.  The topic of the PhD is open across political ecology, critical physical geography, and allied domains, though of course I will look favourably on topics that have a potential for topical, theoretical, or geographical synergies with me and my current team.

The announcement is visible here on the university’s recruitment website : https://tinyurl.com/2s5py9dw

You must be fully operational in both French and English.  The thesis (and application) can be written in either language. The applications are due March 2, 2026.  Start date is September 1.  Feel free to contact me by email in the meantime with questions.

  • Experience in empirical field research and in methods appropriate to the proposed research topic (or specific plans to acquire such skills)
  • Demonstrated familiarity with, and ability to engage critically in, theoretical debates in geography, political ecology and/or related critical social science fields, including the ability to mobilise theory in empirical research.

  • Independence and initiative
  • Synergies with the supervisors’ specific interests and field areas
  • Excellent reading, writing, and communications skills in both French and English (French is the main teaching language at UNIL)
