Graduate assistant PhD position in Environmental change / Critical human geography

I am recruiting a second graduate assistant / doctoral student post here at the Institut de géographie et durabilité (IGD) at the Université de Lausanne.

This is a paid position of up to five year duration, with at least half the time dedicated to your independent PhD project and up to half as my teaching/research assistant.  The topic of the PhD is open though of course I will look favourably on topics that have a potential for topical, theoretical, or geographical synergies with me, my current team, the broader Political Ecologies research collective, and the IGD.

The announcement is visible here on the university’s recruitment website (in French and English – button at top right). https://career5.successfactors.eu/career?company=universitdP&career_job_req_id=22915&career_ns=job_listing&navBarLevel=JOB_SEARCH

You must be fully operational in both French and English.  Your application (and, eventually, thesis) can be written in either language. The applications are due August 30.  Start date is January 2027 or soon thereafter. Feel free to contact me by email in the meantime with questions.

The criteria I will use for choosing the candidate:

  • Interest and experience in the social dimensions of environmental change or natural resource management issues in specific regional landscapes
  • Experience in empirical field research and in methods appropriate to the proposed research topic (or specific plans to acquire such skills)
  • Demonstrated familiarity with, and ability to engage critically in, theoretical debates in geography, political ecology and/or related critical social science fields (e.g. environmental anthropology, STS), including the ability to mobilise critical theory in empirical research.
  • Ability (or interest in learning) to support teaching through activities such as running discussion groups, evaluating assignments, delivering a guest lecture, supporting students
  • Independence and initiative
  • Synergies with the supervisors’ specific interests, field areas, or experience (https://christiankull.net).
  • Excellent reading, writing, and communications skills in both French and English (French is the main teaching language at UNIL)
  • Experience in the region and language of the proposed field site, if possible.
